The "Linggo ng Wika" was established to celebrate the Filipino language and culture. It began in 1956 through Proclamation No. 186 declaring August as the Buwan ng Wika (Language Month) by then Secretary of Education, Jose Villa Panganiban. It was later expanded to Linggo ng Wika (Language Week) to promote the use of Filipino languages.
