answ2. The war between China and Japan was continued actively, deep in the interior, right up to the point of the Japanese surrender after the Nagasaki bomb.

This war had started in 1937, and was supported by Germany and the Soviet Union, all of whom hoped to share in the spoils.

Access to the vast Chinese raw materials was the target.

The atrocities of this war incensed the world, and this was the cause of the blockade of Japan, to which Pearl Harbour was their eventual answer.

In the interim the Japanese attempted to conquer much of SE Asia in search of raw materials including the oil and rubber of Burma.

The actual occupation of China by Japan was principally of the port cities, but did include a large swathe of the interior. There were possibly as many casualties in this war as in the remainder of the Pacific War theatre in WWII.

There is still much contention between the two countries about events such as the Nanking Massacre, and the Japanese use of bacteriological and chemical weapons.

Due to US preoccupations with the Soviets, many war criminals were allowed to remain free.
