The "I.N.R.I." posted on top of the Cross of Jesus means "Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum."

In Latin, it means, "Jesus (the) Nazarene, King (of the ) Jews." It was supposed to be the "crime" that Jesus was accused of, for which He was being executed - in other words, the death sentence. Apparently, the Jewish authorities considered it an insult to be told that Jesus was their king. They demanded that Pilate took the sign down, but Pilate refused, saying, "What have written, I have written."

There used to be no letter "J" in the original Latin alphabet, just the "I." But now, both letters are freely used interchangeably.

It is said, at one time, Pope John Paul II was signing a bunch of church documents in Latin as "+Joannes Paulus II, pp." A priest who was an expert in Latin tried to correct him, saying "Your Holiness, there is no letter 'J' in Latin." The Pope answered, "There is, now."
