Edward Crisp Bullard(1907-1980),english geophysicist,who with american geologist Maurice Ewing founded the discipline of marine geophysics.He pioneered the application of the seismic method to study the seafloor(see Plate Tectonics).He also studied continental drift before the theory became generally accepted.

Bullard was born in Norwich,England,and was educated at the University of Cambridge.During World War 2(1939-1945)he did military research,and he continued to advise the British Ministry of Defence for several years after the war.He was a Professor of geophysics at the University of Toronto,Canada,from 1948 10 1950;director of the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington,Middlesex,England,from 1950-1957;and head of geodesy and geophysics at Cambridge from 1957-1974.He was also a professor at the University of California from 1963 on,and advised the U.S. government on Nuclear -Waste disposal
